Use an Insulin Pen
Several
companies manufacture insulin pens, including Novo Nordisk, Aventis, Eli Lilly
and Biocon. These companies make pens for most of their insulins, including NovoLog
/ NovoRapid, Humalog, Levemir, and Lantus. It was introduced and marketed as Novo Pen by the Danish
company Novo Nordisk in 1985.
There are
two ramp systems: durable and pre-filled
· A durable pen uses a replaceable
insulin cartridge. When the insulin cartridge is empty, the empty cartridge is
discarded and a new one is inserted into the pen.
- · A pre-filled pen is completely
disposable.
- · Most brands of insulin are now
available for use in pens, including:
- · NovoMix, NovoRapid and Levemir from
Novo Nordisk
- · Lantus and Apidra from Sanofi-Aventis
- · Humulin and Humalog from Eli Lilly
and Company
- · INSUGEN and BASALOG from Biocon

If you need
to take insulin, you will probably need to inject yourself. The injection can
be particularly scary for the first time. .
An insulin
pen is a device that makes injecting insulin easier and more convenient than
using a syringe.

Step 1.
Prepare the Insulin Pen
1. Wash
your hands with soap and water.
2. Remove the cap
3.Check the
insulin to make sure it is what your doctor has prescribed.
4.Intermediate
or long-acting insulin will appear cloudly. Roll the pen between your
palms until the white powder has disappeared. Or you can turn the pen up and
down gently a few times
5.Wipe
the tip of the pen with an alcohol swab
Step 2.
Remove Tab and Needle Covers
a. Remove the
protective pull tab from the needle and screw the needle onto the pen
b. Remove the
needle cap
A. Looking at
the dose window, turn the dosage knob to one or two units.
B . Holding the pen up with the needle pointing upwards, then press the injection button all the way until you see a drop of insulin at the needle tip. The dosage knob should be back at zero after completing this step
Step 4. Dial
your Insulin Dose
B. Choose your injection site.
c. With one hand, hold
the pen such that your thumb is free to reach the injection button
D. With one hand, hold
the pen such that your thumb is free to reach the injection button
